BA2B Week 1

This week I was ill and my hearing wasn't great, but I was still able to understand most of the briefing.

Deliverables for the research report proposal:
  • An edited and proofread draft of chapter 1 (1000 words)
  • Research blog
Contents of final research report:

  • Cover page
  • An abstract
  • Table of contents
  • Table of illustrations (if any work is illustrated)
  • Introduction
  • Body of report
  • Conclusion
  • Bibliography 
Tips:

  • 3-6 chapters
  • Don't just state facts, question and back them up
  • Show understanding of my generalist/specialist roles
  • Chapter 1 should be an overview chapter to contextualize the rest of the report and define any unfamiliar terms you intend to use
  • Check out examples of previous student reports
  • The topic must be something you're genuinely interested in, but be realistic
  • Will the topic feed into your practice in some way?
Types of research report:
  • Extended essay (standard academic method)
  • Industry report (analysis of roles and practices)
  • Technical report (Analysis of my own experimentation)
  • Reflective research report (reflection on my own and others work)
  • Editorial (article and analysis of it)
Acceptable forms of research:
  • Interview by email/social media (needs screenshots and dates)
  • Interview in person (needs full transcript and dates)
  • Films
  • Documentaries
  • Director interviews
  • Podcasts
  • Radio broadcasts

BA3A Week 1

Feedback on my research report proposal (first draft of first chapter): Strengths:  Good report proposal, good topic Already begun conducting research (although take care when citing to use the Harvard style rather than footnotes) Sensible to start with Disney, providing useful historical context for the topic Writing style is enjoyable to read Journal shows a good understanding of areas I’ll need to develop Areas to improve:  First chapter is rather sketchy, several important details are missing or brushed over too quickly Try and access a wider range of research sources (recommended ‘The Illusion of Life’ by Frank Thomas/Ollie Johnston, and a book on semiotics) Try not to rely on blogs too much Avoid talking ‘to’ the reader, e.g. ‘First, let’s take a look at’ Some relevant images would be really helpful

BA3A Week 6

Continuing on from last week, I intend to look into what makes a good main character and main cast for a long-running series. Ideas for points and how to back them up: Characters that feel strong and unique resonate with people Interesting characters care deeply, and caring deeply comes from strong opinions Every character needs a goal In a likeable cast of characters, never give two characters the same personality "There are other opposing character functions that are part of a well-rounded story.
